Stories From the Farm
One of my favorite places to is Kline Creek Farm and I thought it would be a good place to start my new storytelling photo challenge. I was just there over the weekend so all the photos I’m using will be from then. I’m not quite sure how I want the format for these blog posts to be. I’m sure they will change over time because I’ll play around with them and part of the feedback that I get. Part of me wants to hold off on these posts until I have everything I want to set the way I want but I know better than that. If I wait then it will never happen. Let's get to the reason you're probably here. PHOTOS!!
If you click through the gallery above you can see all the photos I’m going to talk about. I’m going to talk about them individually but I wanted to give you a peak at the ones I was going to talk about. When I was looking at the photos I had picked and already edited and found a theme of the animals and one of the people who take care of them. I did take and pick ones that were landscape and a couple of me. I was trying to get a new profile picture for the socials. I decided on these 5 because that fit under the same umbrella.
Kline Creek as a combination of volunteers and people who work for the forest preserve that spend time telling people about the farm and what it was like to be in the 1800’s. I’m not sure if he is a volunteer or works for the Dupage Forest Preserve but I see him a lot. He was talking to a couple about different farming tools and how much time a family would spend with each other in a typical day. I was able to catch this moment of him leaning up on the fence and smiling. I hope you can see why I chose this one. What is your favorite part of this photo.
After the couple walked away to visit the rest of the farm, he continued his work with the calf. He was trying to get the calf used to being around people and being led on a rope. I love the fence leads your eye to the farm hand and the cow. I stuck my hands and camera just past an opening in the fence to get the shot. I wasn’t sure if I would like it but I liked what I was seeing on the back of the camera and loved it when I got it onto my computer. In the editing I went with the old time look and I also did it in black and white but I think I like this version better.
Over my time visiting the farm I’ve gotten some fun photos of the sheep. I was standing by the fence and the sheep was father away from me when I first walked up. I was taking other shots and then this guy came walking up to get water from the troff. I think it was curious of me and my camera because it kept eyeing me. After getting a drink, it looked at me and that is when I snapped this shot. I didn’t do a whole lot of editing to the photo but I did use one of the brushes to bring up the shadows on its face to make it easier to see. I try to do as much in camera has I can but I had to choose between shadows on its face or a blown out background. I decided was easier to bring the shadows up then it would be to try to fix the background.
I horses were near the parking lot which isn’t where they normally are when I come to visit. When I walked in there were a bunch of families around them so I decided to get shots on my way out. I was hoping that there were going to be less people around when I was heading out. I thought this shot was not going to turn out but I’m trying not to delete photos while I’m still photographing. I thought it was going to come out way to dark for me to fix. It turned out better than I thought it would but not exactly what I was going for. I think it’s still turned out pretty cool.
One of the last photos of the day. I had trouble with the editing with this one. I exposed for the background and the details of the horse became hard to see. I was able to use one of my brushes to bring up the exposure and shadows of the horse to be able to see her(or him). I grateful to be able edit my way into this photo. I like how I captured the the motion of the tail being flipped around.
I would love your feedback on this post by posting your thoughts below. What is your favorite photo and why. I would love for you to share this post. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!!
Peace,
Katie
